Innovega to release contact lens displays.
Innovega Inc has developed contact lenses capable of presenting high resolution images for entertainment or augmented reality applications.
“Conventional mobile device screens are too small to read and certainly too small to enjoy. Over the past months we have demonstrated contact lens enabled eyewear for mobile devices including smartphones, portable game devices and media players that deliver panoramic, high-resolution experiences for entertainment and planned Augmented Reality (AR)* applications”, said Steve Willey, Innovega CEO. “During this same period, we collaborated with partners to finalize initial specifications of launch platforms which include a screen size that is equivalent to a 240 inch television (viewed at a usual distance of 10 feet)”.
The lens uses ‘micro components’ which are so small that, when switched off, the user is able to focus normally on everyday objects. When switched on, it allows light from the display to pass through the center of the pupil, and light from the surrounding environment to pass through the outer portion of the pupil. Each of these sets of light rays produces an image on the retina simultaneously with the other set. They are superimposed to form a single integrated image.
While a consumer release of the product is likely 2-3 years away, the company is also working with DARPA for a military version of the device.

Perhaps in the future, our realities may not be what they seem.

New cloaking device hides events in time.
Researchers at Cornell University have created  a machine capable of ‘time cloaking’, or hiding a complete event from an observer. Using a electro-optic modulator to first compress the light in time on one side of the event, and a similar machine to decompress light on the other side, a short gap in time is able to be completely hidden.
To the observer watching from behind the second lens, time appears undistorted, as if the event never happened.
The device is currently capable of hiding an event of 110 nanoseconds long, with the researchers predicting that up to 120 microseconds should be possible with the current generation device.

Perhaps in the future, our realities may not be what they seem.

Another entrant in the “AR windshield” concept market. I actually pretended I was driving while watching this video and found it hard to read the alerts on the screen without taking my eyes off the road for a good amount of time.

It would seem that cars are headed toward driving themselves sooner than we’ll have a viable AR windshield, so it may be a futile race.

This augmented reality game is basic, yes, but the fact that it tracks your calorie loss while playing has some fascinating implications. Perhaps in the future, augmented reality will help us become more active by counter-acting the lean-back nature of sitting at a computer. It won’t do it alone, but the angle that AR can be healthy is an interesting one.
